Chicago - The State of Illinois' new law allowing couples to enter into civil unions takes effect on Wednesday, June 1, and there's already an attempt to reverse it.

Activists are launching a drive to put a repeal of the civil unions law before voters.

The debate was rekindled outside the Thompson Center Friday afternoon.

There were two protests Friday afternoon, one calling for the repeal of civil unions and a counter-protest for the rights of gay couples. Police were out in force to keep the protests orderly and peaceful.

The law will give couples who get a civil union the same rights as married couples.

Illinois will be the sixth state in the country to legalize some form of civil unions for gay couples.
