Gay Marriage Advocates March Downtown

(WBBM780) CHICAGO Proponents of same-sex marriage marched through the downtown area Saturday, from Daley Plaza through the County Building and up to Holy Name Cathedral.

WBBM Newsradio 780's Bob Roberts reported that the activists even staged a wedding on the front steps of the Cathedral, with the man wearing a wedding dress and the woman sporting a tuxedo and a fake mustache.

They greeted those leaving the Cathedral's 12:10 p.m. Mass with a bawdy chant.

Although the tactics may not have won many friends, protest organizer Andy Thayer said he was hoping to find some sympathy among Catholics and other Christians who question the church's teachings on homosexuality and marriage.

"We're appealing to people of faith, of good conscience, whether they be Catholic or not, to actually speak out against religious leaders when they side with bigotry," he said.

Cook County Clerk David Orr and Mayor Richard M. Daley have both said repeatedly that they favor gay rights, but have said that Illinois law forbids same-sex marriage. Thayer said if they really backed the idea, they'd permit same-sex marriages to go forward and fight the battle in the courts.
