GAYS, LESBIANS TO RALLY AT MARRIAGE BUREAU

CHICAGO - The Gay Liberation Network is calling for support at a march and rally in front of the Cook County Marriage License Bureau, 118 N. Clark St., on Freedom to Marry Day, Saturday, Feb. 11, 11 a.m.

Because another federal anti-gay constitutional amendment looms in 2006, the marriage issue continues to play a pivotal role in determining if LGBT people will become legal equals in the U.S.

"Past battles for legal equality have never been won by the courts and legislatures alone," said GLN's Izzy Becerill. "Indeed, the most dramatic victories for equality have come only when people demanded their rights in the streets of America, and thus forced the government to implement the promises its politicians have made.

"With all three branches of the federal government increasingly moving against gay people, we urgently need the 'street heat' which birthed the modern LGBT movement and saved thousands of lives in the darkest days of the AIDS struggle," Becerill said.
