Tell your Senators:

Don’t Confirm Anti-Science, Religious Zealot For Surgeon General

Unless President Bush withdraws the name of James Holsinger from consideration, the US Senate will be called upon to confirm an anti-science, anti-gay bigot for one of the nation’s top science posts. It’d be as oxymoronic as proposing someone who favors torture to become the nation’s top law enforcement official (opps, sorry, that’s already been done).

* Surgeon General nominee James Holsinger has cut his teeth as an anti-gay ideologue, pushing the anti-science quackery known as “reparative therapy,” the alchemy of turning gay people “straight” that has been debunked by every applicable medical society.

* As a United Methodist lay person, he has been in the forefront of those opposing LGBT clergy and pushing Methodist support for "ex-gay ministries."

* At his most absurd, Holsinger has claimed that the way that human “plumbing” fits together “scientifically” justifies his anti-gay creed!

Bush has shown that he will back down in the face of strong opposition. Cases in point include Donald Rumsfeld and Harriet Meiers, his luckless legal aide nominated for the Supreme Court and then withdrawn in a storm of criticism.

We cannot afford to have an anti-gay religious zealot overseeing scientific matters of vital concern to our community such as AIDS, cancer and sex education. Please take a moment to contact your senators and insist that they stand firm against this nominee who would be laughable if he wasn’t so dangerous.
